August 8th Updates!

Asharq Alawsat: U.S. sources said that Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh decided, finally, not to return to Yemen, because of exerted U.S. pressure on him, and because of his fear of prosecution, such as the one the Egyptian Revolution is putting former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak through.

The sources told «Asharq Alawsat» The U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, Gerald Firestein, asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs not to talk about the «U.S. pressure» on Saleh, but about «American interests». This is because Saleh, said the Ambassador is a «stubborn person, and should not be cornered».

The sources said that opponents in Yemen asked the Ambassador «not to negotiate with Saleh via the media»; because Saleh according to his opponents is ready «to ally with the devil», with «al Qaeda», and with the Houthis, despite the strong hostility among them.

The U.S. Ambassador conveyed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that if Saleh returned he would be more angry on his opponents, especially those who tried to kill him, especially that his injuries don't prevent him from returning; it's external burns and breathing problems.

News quoted from Sana'a, the day before yesterday, that the Ambassador, during An Iftar feast in his home for Yemeni officials and media, revealed about «undisclosed negotiations» conducted with Saleh, and also between Saleh and the opposition. The Ambassador denied accusations of some of the youth protesters, that Washington is interested in the war against the «al Qaeda» more than its concern for Saleh's departure.

The sources said Washington that the U.S. position towards Saleh is stressed lately due to anger at the Yemeni forces during recent clashes with «al Qaeda» fighter since Yemeni forces hit militants tribes of Abyan province, which played a key role in the fight against «al Qaeda».

With regard to the reasons of the Yemeni President's decision to stay in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the US sources said: Saleh settled on staying in Saudi Arabia; where former Tunisian President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, due to fear of his trial in Yemen after a regime change. And that Saleh wanted treatment in Germany, but Germans accepted on the condition of receiving him as an ordinary citizen, not as President of the Republic.

U.S. sources did not specify the timing of Saleh's signature on the Gulf initiative but said as long as he decided to stay in Saudi Arabia, then he must sign it, with amendments relevant to the elections and providing guarantees for Saleh's family.

Regarding the demonstrations and the role of youth in Yemen, the sources said that the renewed demonstrations in Egypt with the appearance of former President Mubarak before court encouraged the Yemeni youth to raise the ceiling of their demands, which led Saleh's decision not to return to Yemen.

On the future of the U.S. war against the «al Qaeda» in Yemen, the sources said that there is division within the Department of Obama's moderate wing, led by John Brennan, Obama's adviser for terrorism, who has worked with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the region for many years, and has a long relationship with Saleh, while the the tougher wing is led by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton which announced earlier that Saleh has to leave, regardless of any other factors.

Commenting on the news, Abdul Hafiz Alnahari, head of media and information in the General People's Congress Party in Yemen said: «The non-return of Yemeni President is an American desire, but the president insists on returning to impose the basis of a peaceful transfer of power so that Yemenis don't fight over it. And that the return is linked to the completion of a period of recuperation, but that the outstanding issues will not wait for the return of President; because the deputy is authorized to address them, especially a dialogue with the opposition ».

Regard to the Gulf initiative he said: « the provided stages of the initiative is no longer realistic, nor practical, and political parties in Yemen agree in this, but the solution will not be too far away from the spirit of Gulf initiative without complying with the timeframe specified in the initiative».

Abdullah Razi, Yemeni Ambassador to the United Kingdom, said that «there is no indication that the President will not return to his homeland». He said in a call with «Asharaq Alawsat» of London: «the important topic today for Yemenis is the dialogue that should continue between the political parties to reach a solution, regardless of the large number of statements about the return of the president who does not mind returning to his country after the completion of the recovery period ».

The Saudi embassy in Sana'a has reportedly suspended issuance of pilgrims' visas for the third consecutive week despite the approval they got from the Saudi Foreign Ministry.

Abdulellah Al-Shayea- August 6th- Press Conference

Why was Journalist Abdulellah Haidar Al-Shayae arrested?

Hood Organization Lawyer, Abdulrahman Burman: They did not find a single word, the device that was held to account was a laptop, we don't know if its his device or a similar one to his which was stolen when he was arrested by armed men from night until dawn. I called National Security and they denied that they arrested him, Political Security, CID, all the security devices denied that they had him. This means that there was an armed group that kidnapped him and stolen his laptop. We were completely surprised that the prosecutor has a laptop, there was no file or report in the case that proves where the laptop came from. The judge during sentencing based his ruling on Abdulellah on what was stated in the laptop; even the CD's, 380 of them were cartoons for his children. All the CDs did not even have one word against him. Everything that was found with Abdulelah from phones and such, do not carry any condemntion at all, everything that the judge based his decision on was from the laptop that was stolen by armed men. The evidence which the court used was a word document on the desktop which is a converstation between two people, the converstation did not indicate or explain who the conversation was between; Abdulellah's name was not mentioned neither is the other person that they claimed to be Anwar Al-Awlaqi. Of course, this court, as lawyers we boycotted as well as Abdulellah's insistence in boycotting it. Abdulellah was sentenced, I spoke to him and sent him more than one message to appeal the ruling but he refused and said that he would prefer to remain in prison than to return to the play that was formulated by state security services.

After that they sentenced him and the issue was over, and President was said issue a pardoned; which he did and directed the secretarial to print out an official memo to his release and pardon. Of course, they used to contact us from the presidential secretariat and ask us if we have a copy of the sentence so that they refer to when issuing the pardon, we told them that we do not have any copies. They issued the pardon and it was placed in a file in the Presidents office to sign it on the next day. Before it was signed by the President in a couple of hours, there were some talks between President Saleh and Obama as it was reported by western media and American media as well as Yemeni media; they reported that Obama expressed his dismay on President Saleh's decision to free Abdulellah Haidar Shayea. So far, Abdulellah is no longer in the Republic of Yemen prison, but now imprisoned by the order of USA President who hapered the release that was issued by the President.

Today we have a problem, which is the problematic health condition of Abdulellah in prison. He is suffering from serious health problems, notably he has knee pain and chest allergy; Red Cross visited him and decided that he should be transferred to the hospital. The prison administration agreed to transfer him to the hospital but handcuffed. Abdulellah refused, he said "I am a journalist and not a criminal, seems that you lied the lie and believed it. I am ready to go under any sort of security -guards- but to go to the hospital handcuffed, I would rather die in prison then to go in this way."

I made a request last week to Political Security to allow us to visit him and see his health condition, but unfortunately, Political Security Secretaria refused to even receive the request that we sent from Hood Organization to allow us to visit him. They claimed that their manager was not available. We even sent them the request by fax, and until this day from the past week we did not receive any answer or consent to visit.

This painful memory did not target Abdulellah Haidar but targeted all journalists and every person that spoke and wrote freely without seeing the consequences of what would him to him. We today, when standing in solidarity with Abdulellah Haidar, we are standing in solidarity with freedom of speech and all the liberal and honorable journalists.

Khaleej Times newspaper, quoting these sources, said that the representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Jamal Ben Omar, gave the leaders of the ruling party and the JMP a time limit not exceeding one week to reach a compromise and agree on a formula to the differences between them otherwise the United Nations will withdraw it's initiative which aimed at resolving the political crisis in Yemen.

Aggression against the tribes, the tribesmen participating in the popular youth-led revolution, the revolution supporters and defenders or their areas will be an aggression against all Yemeni tribes that will require a strong response with souls and funds, the alliance said in a statement.

The statement came days after the army deployed more forces and vehicles to Al-Hasaba, which was the battlefield for deadly clashes between the forces and the tribal fighters loyal to sheikh Sadeq Al-Ahmer of Hashid in June. The deployments raised fears battles could erupt soon, especially after the forces attacked the houses of two of Sadeq Al-Ahmer’s brothers.

The attacks on the two houses were revenge on Al Al-Ahmer and the people who are still suffering from the June battles, the statement said.
Furthermore, the statement urged the officers and soldiers of the republican guard to ignore the orders of their leader, the son of President Saleh, to kill the people and involve them in more crimes against the people.

“We call on the republican guard officers and soldiers to leave their positions as they realize that the Saleh family is using them, and to avoid legal accountability for what is happening in the country,” the alliance said.

The Yemeni Tribes’ Alliance was declared almost a week ago inside Change Square in Sana’a.

Marebpress: Sources revealed that the international mediation, led by the United Nations, to settle the political crisis in Yemen was hindered due to sharp differences between the ruling party and the JMP on some points of the road map suggested by the delegate of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Jamal Ben Omar

The sources pointed out that the main point preventing reaching an agreement to accept the UN initiative is the insistence of the leaders of the ruling party (GCP) to confine and limit the delegation of powers of President Saleh to his deputy to represent the ruling party, and to negotiate with the parties and sign the agreement document which concludes the results of the negotiations, which is rejected by the leaders of the JMP who insist that President Saleh should fully transfer his presidential powers to his deputy, Abed Rabbo Mansur Hadi.
